The other day I ended up listening to the soundtrack of the movie New Moon, second movie of the Twilight Saga. And I realized that it was rather good. It's a problem when you noticed that the best thing about a movie is its soundtrack, isn’t it? (Well maybe Taylor Lautner’s chest was also good)
It's not something I am proud of, but I did read all of the four books, and I have seen all the movies made so far (and will probably see the ones that are to come). I think it's a girl thing to at least read them and see what all the fuzz is about, but it made me wonder something: is it possible that Twilight is for some people what Harry Potter is to me? You know? Life changing? The thought alone feels like an insult, you may think I am biased about it (perhaps I am) but the fact remains that many hearts around the world skipped a beat for these books.
What that tells me is that the world is in desperate need of a good love story, something everlasting and impossible, something true and valuable, and something that can defeat all the evil in the world and still strongly prevail. The world needed a story that can makes us believe that something purely romantic can exist, feel how our lovers can make it work despite all of their instincts, and ours.
It’s clear that if people are putting Bella and Edward in the same category as Romeo and Juliet, something has been missing from our souls for a long time. The comparison is obviously ridiculous, we can’t, we simply can’t compare the best love story of all times to a teen love story about a vampire and a human girl, can we? Can Stephenie Meyer be in the same league than William Shakespeare? And I thought I was crazy!
But the good part about this is that it makes my theories about love and life, true. We need it so badly that we are willing to take anything we can grasp onto that seems remotely impossible and eternal, we have diminished love so much in our society that sometimes, we take for granted how much we need it, and to believe in it. I have been looked at in a funny way, many times, when I’ve declare myself a helpless romantic, when I have admitted that I read love poems or that I’m a sucker for what we call “chick flicks”. My guess is we are all helpless romantics deep inside. Should we create Romantics Anonymous? Maybe join a 12 step program?
The moment someone dares to believe true love exists is when their lives change forever. Teens and young adults were perhaps passed by the whole Romeo and Juliet tragedy and never knew what a good love story can do for you. Thankfully I did not need Twilight to show me this amazing and absolute truth. But maybe our teens did…
I leave you with: All I believe in By The Magic Numbers (New Moon movie)
